Your Terrible Job Has a Lot to Teach You
If you’re willing to learn, it can change your life
We’ve all been there. Trudging through a soul-sucking job you’d do anything to quit, only to wake up every Monday morning and realize you have to do it again.
Most days, you dream of strutting into your boss’s office, saying “I quit,” and hearing them beg you to stay as you walk out the door.
I’ve worked that type of job, and I’ve had those same dreams. I worked four years in banking, where I spent every day dealing with angry customers who treated me like a thing instead of a human being. I’ve had those toxic bosses and even more toxic coworkers.
I promise you I’m a big proponent of getting out as quickly as possible for your own mental health. Sometimes, though, staying is more valuable than leaving.
Look, I’m not asking you to love, or even like your terrible job. But maybe — just maybe — that job you’re trying to escape is hiding some valuable wisdom for you. It may be unrelated to your actual work, but if you’re willing to learn, a terrible job can teach you a lot.
Here are a few of the biggest lessons it taught me.
