You Must Have This Skill to Succeed On Medium

There’s a writer on Medium I can’t stand.

I don’t know if she believes everything she writes. I kind of doubt it. She’s a talented writer who knows how to trigger people’s emotions. This writer and I have two different and incompatible world views, so why do I read her work?

Because I respect her talent.

I have to admit, this writer knows how to engage her audience. She has learned the skill any decent writer knows: successful writers trigger their reader’s emotions.

If you want to find success on Medium, you must learn to tap into your readers emotions.

Popular writers on Medium create what the writing coach David Farland calls an “emotional symphony.” It’s where you play your reader’s emotions like a song, and hammer down on one or two of them. It works whether you’re blogging or writing a novel. If you don’t engage your reader’s emotions, why would they keep reading?

Most online readers (blog, post, and article readers) don’t care about facts and logic.

You can write the most well-researched, factual, and grammatically correct article. But if your writing doesn’t touch a nerve it will disappear into the void of Medium’s…
