The other day I ran across a quote by George Lucas that made me stop and think. It said: “The ultimate power in the world is the power to tell a story.”

When you think of power, you probably don’t think of stories. So what makes them so powerful?

Because stories shape how we understand ourselves and the world.

It’s why we tell stories to our children before bedtime, and why we love reading and watching movies as adults. Stories impact us on a deep, psychological level and they can set us up to be either victors or victims.

They’re teaching us the wrong things. Namely, that your value lies in your identity rather than your willingness to struggle, learn, and overcome challenges.

If you want to improve the quality of your life, improve the quality of the stories you consume.

Let me explain.

Stories Help You Navigate Change

Like most people who were alive that day, I remember exactly where I was on 9/11.

Major events like that have a way of searing themselves in our mind, even if we aren’t directly affected by them.
