The noble knight, Rowan, crested the hilltop and looked into the valley below, unsure of which way to go.

The valley was green and wide and lay between a fork in the road. One road led into the rocky mountains to the west. The other led east, across the flat land so far it disappeared in the distance.

It was late in the evening and Rowan was tired because he was traveling home at the end of a long war. For eight years, he and his men had battled the men and monsters of Yort, the southern kingdom that had started the war after kidnapping the princess of Rimell.

Now that the war had ended (with Yort laid waste and the princess rescued), Rowan and his men began their journey home, and he was alone on this last leg of the journey.

In the valley between the fork, Rowan saw the outline of a small village. Although, from where he was standing, he could tell something wasn’t right. There was a cluster of buildings on the right side of the valley, beside the road leading east.

But Rowan didn’t think about the oddities of the place too much because he only wanted a meal and a place to sleep.
