When the two cars crashed into each other, Amir was already thirty-seven minutes late for work.

It wasn’t one of those little crashes either — what some people call a fender bender. The car in front of Amir had decided to try its luck making it through the light that had turned red a few seconds before. An oncoming pickup truck t-boned the car and there was a pop of crunching metal and screech of rubber tires.

Amir slapped the steering wheel with the palm of his hand. “Are you kidding me? I don’t need this today.

His eyes darted in both directions, ignoring the twisted mass of metal swirling eddies of stream rising in the air. Other people were getting out of their cars now, some on their telephones.

There’s nothing I can do to help, Amir reasoned. First responders will be here soon.

Throwing his black BMW into drive, he smashed the gas. Wheels screeched on the pavement as he peeled off around the collision, paying no mind to the bystanders he pushed out of the way.

This was not the day to play a hero.
