I am a Millennial, a child of the 90s, and now a young-ish adult with a family of my own. I’m part of the last generation whose childhood was mostly pre-internet, and before 9/11.

A lot of negative things have been said about my generation — we’re lazy, entitled, unattached — and billions of dollars have been spent trying to figure us out. What do we want? How do we make decisions? How do employers keep us happy? Most of that money could have been put to better use elsewhere, but hey, I don’t make the calls.

My generation came of age with many world events colliding, and those events have shaped our collective consciousness. Most of us vividly remember 9/11, we also remember getting our first email account, and signing up for Facebook when it was just for college students. We enterd the workforce during the Great Recession, and many of us are still playing catch up.

Every generation faces unique challenges. But there are some harsh truths it’s time we recognize aren’t changing, even with all of our technology and passion. One of the great pitfalls of my generation is that we’ve believed the illusion that technology has made us better than other generations — that we are somehow special…
