There are a few things I know for sure. One, whatever path you choose in life will be dangerous and harder than you think. You will face constant temptation to quit or settle for an easy, proven path. Two, you need to know what you value in life or you’ll make decisions you regret and quietly hate yourself for it.

The problem is we value the wrong things — convenience, ease, fitting in, image — because that’s what society tells us to value.

It’s easier to let someone tell you how to think and live than to figure it out for yourself. So we end up pursuing goals and living lives that look good on paper but are unfulfilling. As the author, Jack London said, “Find out about this earth, this universe… And by all this, I mean work for a philosophy of life.” The way you respond to life’s questions and obstacles reveals your core values and determines the kind of life you’ll live.

With that in mind, here are 13 unconditional core values to help you create the life you want so you don’t end up lost or resentful. I present them as an alternative to more common values. Do not let their simplicity fool you. They are more difficult to live up to than you think but worth pursuing regardless of your life path.
